The evening news on September 27, 2018 stated the following as a cover story: Timothy Mariconi was gunned down in front of his home in the Federal Hill community in Baltimore City. The shooter is unknown. A smiling picture of the victim lite up the television screen. Neighbors were interviewed declaring their shock and anger. This type of crime does not happen in their part of the city. A $2,000 reward was advertised for any information that would result in the apprehension of the perpetrator. Then the news went on to discuss other events in the City and the up coming midterm elections. Further on in the half hour production was the following announcement:
“A shooting happened today at 1:30 around Druid Hill and Dolphin Street.”
“Another shooting occurred this evening around 7:00 pm near the intersection of Mosher and MaCalla street.”
There were no names or faces of those victims. Is the media correct? Is one life more important than another?
Its news when something unusual happens (shooting in a normally peaceful neighborhood). Gang or drug related shootings are, unfortunately, commonplace and not news.
There isn’t any area of Baltimore City that is exempt from gang or drug violence. The big difference is in areas considered to be primarily black or primarily white. This is evident in the murder of a young Johns Hopkins researcher who was stabbed to death in Charles Village. Cries of alarm were all over the city. The Mayor and the Chief of police had public meetings on the steps of the Cathedral of Incarnation addressing how this problem could and would be fixed. People said, “I can’t believe this happened here”? Why not? Someone was shot to death on their front stoop a few blocks away from the stabbing death in Remington. But that man was black and his name was not mentioned and no one spoke from the steps of the Cathedral of Incarnation.
Too much is not being explained here? What is the point and what has it to do with reparations?
